Information About New Palace, Kolhapur
One of the top tourist attractions in Kolhapur city in the state of Maharastra is New Palace. The construction of the New Palace is done in black stones and dates back to 1877–1884. The New Palace is situated at a wide area and consists of garden, zoo, museum, lake and wrestling ground. This is a must place to see if you ever visit Kolhapur.
Exploring this Palace would give us an idea of how kings were used to living a life in earlier days.
The New Palace has a tower in the middle and a clock was placed on this tower in the year 1877. Today, it is the residence of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj.
About Museum in New Palace
The Museum is located on the ground floor of the New Palace. The museum has on display memorabilia belonging to the Kolhapur rulers which include royal apparel, jewelry, coins, weapons and silver elephant saddles, one of Aurangzeb’s swords. A letter from the British Viceroy and Governor General of India is also a part of the collectibles to be seen. The magnificent Darbar Hall is in the center of the Palace and the ambiance has been recreated to give you a glimpse of Maratha history and its regal splendor. The side walls display lobed arches filled with stained glass illustrating scenes from the life of Shivaji; carved columns with temple-like brackets support the cast iron balcony above. A raised throne is at one end of the Hall.
The Photo Gallery has many interesting pictures of royalty including one of the Maharajah with his hundredth dead tiger, elephant hunts and a series detailing how to train a cheetah.
A section of the museum is dedicated to wildlife hunting that was then a royal sport. Stuffed Tigers, Tiger heads, Wild Dog, Sloth Bear, Wild Buffalo, Lion, Black Panther, Wild Boar, Black Buck, a number of other Deer varieties, and a Himalayan Black Bear can be seen here.
There is a small lake in the palace precincts with an open zoo that has several migratory birds like flamingoes. There are also peacocks, emus, spotted deer, geese. The zoo forms a good side attraction to the Museum which is a must for history buffs.
Best time to visit New Palace Kolhapur
Except for monsoon ( June to Sept), all months are best to visit Kolhapur and explore the historical places and if you want to visit scenic beauties like the fort, mountain and valleys then after monsoon season like from Sept to Jan/Feb are best months.
Typical temperature in summer reaches 40 to 42 d.c
Winters are not chilled like northern state.
